When things went awry in the mind flayer’s lair, Aldreth was hurled into the Elemental Chaos. He was severely weakened—so much so that he thought he might be dead, and he lay drifting in the Chaos for what might have been days or weeks, or perhaps even longer. When a group of minor demons came upon him, he thought he was done for, but as he stood to face them he suddenly realized that he was strong, stronger than he ever remembered feeling before. He dispatched the demons with ease, beginning to realize the truth of the power within him. He made his way through the Chaos until he found an outpost of something like civilization, a githzerai community. Though it took some demonstrations of his power to convince the githzerai, they finally agreed to help return him to the world through a planar portal.
To Aldreth’s mind, very little time has passed—a few weeks at most. But it could have been much longer, either because time was distorted or because he lay at the brink of death much longer than he was aware. His power grew, not because he gained experience, but because the sudden trauma of the single event reminded him of the power he once wielded. He became more himself in one brief span of time.
